EXTERNSHIP OVERVIEW
Prism Career Institute offers students the option to include an externship as a formal part of some programs of study. During an Externship a student is assigned a temporary, non-paid position with an employer who has agreed to provide supervision and a role with responsibilities related to the program of study program. The Externship is designed to provide the student the advantages of putting into practice what they have learned in the classroom in a supportive work environment. If you elect to enroll in a program that includes an externship, it is a mandatory part of the curriculum.

PROGRAM/APPROVALS
The following are programs offered by Prism Career Institute that have been approved for Externships:

• Medical Billing & Coding – 90 hours
• Medical Assistant – 120 hours

The externship for these programs includes 24 hours per week at the externship site and 6 hours per week (Fridays) on campus for review and discussion with other students performing their Externships.

SUPPORTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
The Externship allows the student to apply new skills and knowledge in a real-world setting. This provides a more practical educational experience which adds to the student’s success. Prism Career Institute is committed to making the student’s Externship a positive experience by working closely with the student to find the best fit based on student’s interests, preparedness and education.

ADVANTAGES
Externship provides an opportunity to apply some of the skills gained during the program in a real workplace setting. It will also give the student exposure to diversity, respect and positive interpersonal relationships in the workplace. This experience should be included on student’s resume which can be beneficial in securing employment. It also provides the opportunity demonstrate competency, to network, and build relationships that can lead to employment at the externship site. This is a win-win result for the student and the employer.
